Anyone else find Codegarden daunting

Anyone else find Codegarden daunting when you're attending on your own? I know most people are pretty friendly, but the majority of people are traveling with colleagues. I wonder if they should introduce "Billy No-Mates" lanyards.
s
We used to have a CG buddies one year which was really quite great I hear from newcomers! Not sure if that's being organized again this year. I've been to a few conferences on my own last year and I totally understand where you're coming from! But I do indeed find that people are quite happy to chat. šŸ“· Some people bring a gimmick, that certainly helps.. šŸ˜… https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1197145772630753310/1197146957827821709/52993707730_635df488c8_c.jpg?ex=65ba34fc&is=65a7bffc&hm=ad094a11841d0a118d080eb45e01f6dce167ee9d2310ce5c8b63f49d1ec18d3b&

Damn it. I was planning on bringing my shield. Now I'll have to think of another gimmick. šŸ˜‰
s
It would just lead to a battle of the shields.. win-win!

i was gutted to find out my mate was feeling like this last year and never said anything. It would be good to have a whatsapp group or something where people from different groups can send details of where their group is going next and invite others to join them.
s
I'm inquiring what the chances are of something like uBuddy making a return this year
h
It was a bit daunting coming on your own, but everyone I met was very welcoming so don't let it put you off
s
I hear that there will be a uBuddy program (or something like it) again this year! More info to come...
j
Hey @Sebastiaan can you put me in contact with whoever I could be talking about for that? I think it'd be great content for the Skrift newsletter when everything is organized šŸ™‚ We'd love to promote it to the wider community!
o
Ye, there was uBuddy last year too. I was a buddy but one of the issues was you lose your buddies pretty quickly in the masses. I had a few ideas that I blogged about after the event. Should dig that blog back out at some point.
s
FYI: we've taken note of this feedback and will be using it to improve this year's uBuddy program!

The thing I have missed, in all the times I've been to CG (and I am always a solo-traveller) are people to walk to the venue with. It's about a 15-20 minute trek, but I consistently find myself doing it alone. In years past I have tried generally messaging via twitter, etc: "I'll be waiting at x spot at y time to walk over... join me!" but without much success.
s
Ooh interesting! A Codegarden rallying point at the most popular hotels would be cool. "gather here, whomever shows up every 10 minutes will walk"?
o
Love this idea. My suggestion would be to meet on the corner of Cab Inn or out side the train station, most people will know where the train station is and it's not much of a diversion.
s
Think the problem here is that nobody knows that people are gathering, so if you had a sign at the hotels then it's easier to just grab whomever is there
And Twitter in this case is not useful any more 😦
c
Hotel Whatsapp groups?
s
I wouldn't want to share my phone number with everyone, plus Whatsapp is very country based.. hardly anyone uses it in Denmark but it's huge in NL 🤷
h
quite widely used in the UK too
o
Telegram is good from a "don't share my number' point of view. If the CG app is used then that could be an option too.
h
Well, if it is publicized ahead of time via the app or email, then people might know. If you pick spots right outside those main hotels, then folks who aren't staying there, but nearby could stop over also...
o
I might start posting about this on my socials, see if we can get some traction on the idea.
s
I don't think we have the capacity to organize something for the CG app here unfortunately. But signs in several hotels should be able to be arranged. And then maybe one group could just pick up the next group from the next hotel over 🐾 🐾 🐾
h
I just meant a general announcement message, not anything complicated like 2-way comms.
