personally i am not much bothered (easy for me to say, with 4 million+ downloads 😉 ) I know from my time tweaking the old package pages, people got very passionate about how the 'popular' calculation worked (or didn't most of the time). the core do have this data, and it would be good to see, not sure it might leak thinkgs like how many cloud installs there are, and they might not want that ?

Yes for you, I doubt its not as important but for say like myself and similar it would be good to know of what hack project ideas are more sucessful than others, and where to spend time and energy in the future.

I agree Warren, knowing a package is actually being used would be useful. And Kevin, you may already have your own stats, but active installs would be more useful IMHO than downloads. Some popular packages come and go, yet if we just look at downloads they will remain at the top of a list for a long time as new people will keep trying them, inflating the number of downloads. Also per version stats would be more useful as some packages only work on certain versions 🙂

yeah, i see (and acknowledge) all the flaws with downloads vs active users, (i think marketplace is active, but not sure how it scores it, and the old Our package list also scored things based on last n months of activity)..
