If anyone around between now & 2025 - Happy Holidays & New Year to you ! After a geeky/techy question answered. External SSD drives, there is so many cables & tech types that are the same USB-C shape but I don't know what is what. * USB 3 * USB 3.2x2 * Thunderbolt * USB4 Like what should I look at, consider & what the hell is the difference between them all...
b
Usb 3 is 5gb, and not compatible with thunderbolt (PCIE protocole over usb) 3.2x2 is 20GB transfer speed but same as above TB - depends on version different speeds, but TB 4 and TB 5 are compatible with all usb protocoles and offer addtional features such as multiple display over usb c Usb 4 is based on TB 3 and is partially compatible with TB4 and TB5 so best choice is depends what you exactly need. Based on metioned ssd drive, depends on speed if that is sata than you dont need naything more than usb 3, if it is nvme over TB or USB than you need USB 3.2x2 or USB 4 or Tb depends on compatible of drive
I would probably go for TB4 cable as it is most compatible and cheaper than tb5 but yeah they are more expensive than USB cables :c because of intel certification process
also there is total mess with usb 2 & 3 naming convetion as they changed name 5 times.. also with usb 4 there are features which are optional πŸ€•
Let me know Warren if you need help about it πŸ˜›
w
Yeh it’s an utter mess. So probably a TB4 drive then makes sense for an NVME type SSD
Think laptop got TB5 afaik
b
if you not planning using this cable with anything but nvme ssd i would check what ssd case is supporting and align with it as there might be some compatability issues and not every TB4 cable might work with it (that is even more messy)
w
ARGGH this is just an utter mess
j
If you ignore the version numbers and focus on Gbps it's easier to follow.
b
@Jason not really... version tell you the features πŸ™‚ and with ssd it might be the case is TB not USB etc ;p
in case of TB you can ignore version and focus on speed but with usb not really, as there are feature included in version ;p
j
Funny you should say that, when it comes to storage specifically, USB and Thunderbolt mass storage has been exactly the same protocol since TB4. Unless the external SSD happens to have 2 8K monitors built in or draw hundreds of watts of power the differences between the specs just boils down to speed.
So, if you plug a 40Gbps cable into a 40Gbps port, it's gonna transfer data at... 40Gbps whether it's TB or USB
b
@Jason it is not, they are Compatible not same πŸ˜‰ TB cable might not work with Usb and other way around πŸ˜‰
j
Same with Thunderbolt 5 and USB 4 2.0 (remember when USB told us the naming stupidity was ending... I didn't believe them either).
b
@Jason Yeah, but they are just compatible, they are no same specs, so in most of cases they should work with each other, but I experience already issues with TB not liking USB4 cable for ssd ;p
Safest option is using cable corresponding to protocole, however TB4/TB5 seem the most compatible with all other procotoles as covers specs of both usb and TB ;p
j
Apple device?
b
Windows and Linux
so in my experience is that: TB is fully compatible with usb, Usb is not fully compatible with TB ;p so looking just for speeds not always work if you use usb cable
j
For TB 3, a USB4 cable technically doesn't have to support it... though mine does. Maybe yours doesn't.
b
It wast TB4 device and USB 4 cable
They are compatible, it doesnt means they will always work, thats the thing which people get wrong around it πŸ˜‰
All TB4 certfied cables are also certified with USB4, so yeah it is why i am saying it is most compatible option ;p USB 4 is partially compatible with TB, so depends on cable specs it might or not affect compatibility and looking just for 40gb/s is not warranty compatiblity ;p
j
🀷
b
also to make it more confusing there might dedicate usb features supported by addtional chips incable πŸ˜‚ but that's totally different thread by itself (Dell doing custom standards on top of usb4/tb4)
j
@Warren Buckley post your laptop and external drive spec and @bielu Will choose the right cable for you.
b
@Jason I did offer help with it πŸ˜‚ so you dont have push me πŸ˜‚
w
Yeh MacBook Pro M4 Pro chip so supports Thunderbolt 5 afaik
b
Depends on port: Thunderbolt 5 (up to 120Gb/s) Thunderbolt 4 (up to 40Gb/s) USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s)
πŸ˜‚
apple ❀️
So from what i read they can all work as tb5, tb4 and usb 4 πŸ˜‚
but yeah they listed it as can't work work with multiple protocoles, so if you have multiple device it will use lowest compatible protocole
@Warren Buckley if you tell me if you plan connect just ssd or other devices through hub or something it will help and did you choose already ssd enclosure ?
w
Nope not chosen anything yet
Just be for an SSD no hub to be connected to it
b
than you can choose ssd enclosure with any of protocols USB4/TB4/TB5 πŸ˜‰ as apple will just switch operation mode for port
But you can't use USB 3.2 Gen2X2 so make sure to not choosing anything outside of 3 above protocols
w
Not seen any for TB5 afaik
Just to be specific USB 3.2 Gen2X2 will work but it will work in 3.0 mode, as Apple usb controller/ tb controller doesnt support multilane usb
w
Thanks for the advicer
Why did they make it all so complex these days !!
b
Because they want sell more cables so if you make mistake it profits them πŸ˜‚
w
If you find a TB5 enclosure let me know, as be good to get close to near native internal SSD speeds
b
w
Yeh shame its not an enclosure to bring your own SSD
b
yeah it is actually first certified device for storage for tb5 πŸ˜‚
w
OK well CES around the corner in Jan. So perhaps some more on the way
Right im outta here again - happy xmas you two
b
Happy xmax to you as well
