Mmm Pi 🥧

Heya fellow peeps! Anyone used a Pi5 and the Pimoroni NVME base at all? Currently looking at a Pi5 and NVME hat with a SSD drive for a low cost home server, plex, home assistant, and NAS (samba share)
I reckon @Matt Brailsford may have had a tinker with the NVME hat perhaps?!
So perhaps a broader question with people with Pi’s. What do you use yours for and what’s it running, OS, Software?!
s
I want an nvme hat! Home Assistant for me, apart from running my Umbraco sites of course 😇
Also using as a Nas to power Kodi on our tv
But all still running on a pi 4
w
I have a pi2 running out of space plus it’s sluggish as hell when using it. Hence me looking…
Anyone tried this OS out? https://umbrel.com/umbrelos
m
Yes, I have I pi 5 with nvme adapter and SSD. I have home assistant installed. I bought this case which comes with an nvme adapter so it’s all nicely housed https://thepihut.com/products/argon-neo-5-m-2-nvme-case-for-raspberry-pi-5
I’ve been tempted to get one of these to replace my Synology Nas https://thepihut.com/products/argon-eon-nas-enclosure-for-raspberry-pi-4
I know how easy it is to mess up a Raspberry Pi install so I tend to like having devices for specific use cases rather than one server to rule them all.

Those cases look neat. I was looking at stuff more Frankenstein originally.

Yeh was thinking with a powerful Pi5 compared to what I have I could dockerize it to help not implode it with conflicts etc
s
I don't think a pi2 will improve all that much from an added nvme, it's a pretty underpowered machine in this day and age! Rather spend the same amount of money for a pi5 and add the nvme to that one in a few years.
w
Yeh will be a Pi5 + NVME or external 2.5 SSDs I reckon
Read a rumour somewhere too that a 16GB Pi5 is due this month - how true that is though...
s
My NAS is just a pi4 with a couple of 8TB USB drives connected to it 😅
I have no data redudancy though, that's a future project. First had to reinstall Windows on my main machine this year 😱
w
Yeh this gonna be a pet side project - trying to move away from 101 cloud storage & cloud based stuff. Think this video above showed him setting up as a RAID array from memory (Watched too many)
m
Yea, I should probably get better at using Docker on a PI, but it's just yet another thing to try and remember how it works
w
Yep I don't have a scooby... one for me to figure out as I hack along
m
It's cool, but it's a dust collector so I tend to opt for nice cases so it doesn't get damanaged. It's your redundancy so you want to look after it 🙂
w
Can I not blow on it like a SNES cartridge to make it come back to life ?! 😛
£115 at Pimoroni or PiShop
s
It's a bit of a price jump but if you do use a lot of RAM it's a good price! Do note that you should absolutely get a fan on it, though the case with fan is only £10 extra.
w
Hmmm watched a video and said at this price cost getting close to perhaps a mini pc - so seeing if that may be better :S
s
As usual it depends on what you're going to do with it. I am sure you can get some great mini pcs from ebay though - find some inspiration here: https://codebuntes.entrah-net.co.uk/2024/10/31/umbraco-12-vs-umbraco-13-performance-on-a-variety-of-mini-pcs-2024-edition/

Yes I do need to go back and read this blog post.
