📣 New post: Running Umbraco sites in Docker, still on a Raspberry Pi in my closet at home https://cultiv.nl//blog/running-umbraco-sites-in-docker-still-on-a-raspberry-pi-in-my-closet-at-home

Been dabbling with Docker the last couple of weeks now that I have a NAS that can run docker stuff for me. So been looking into PiHole, Immich and other self-hosted/home-lab kinda stuff. Still feel a noob in all of this, but gonna watch the Hanslemann video to see if some of it just clicks better
s
I'm also feeling a bit out of my depth! But Hanselman at least explains how I can dive in deeper to see what's going on, which is helpful. Also, a bit of help from ChatGPT accellerated some of my attempts!
h
Nice post Sebastiaan, sorry about your Pi though 😢 might have to have a play with docker 😄
c
Awesome post Seb 🙂
I'll be curious which concepts caused the greatest issues for you so I can focus on those in the workshop 🙂
s
Thanks @CarlCod_es - being completely new to Docker, I just felt like it was a black box and no idea what is going on "behind the scenes". Once I understood I could do
docker inspect
,
docker logs
and most of drop inside with
docker -it
- it made it a lot more clear that I was in full control of everything. ChatGPT was of a lot of help there! I will admit that I started on "hard mode" as I didn't really want to install Docker on my windows machine, that was a mistake - Docker desktop is very helpful!

I've just been playing with https://github.com/fosrl/pangolin Wow! It is fantastic and simple to set up.
s
Yeah I heard about it today actually! I need to look into it some time! Basically Pangolin is like a self-hosted Cloudflare Tunnels as far as I understand it
h
Yes, that's correct. Very configurable and simple to add machines and services, and don't have to add loads of cloudfare tunnels to get to all my bits and pieces, can do it all from pangolin
w
Why this over cloudflare or Tailscale ?!
h
Cloudfare website just confuses me, I can never find the stuff I want 🤣 but need the tunnels to get to my local network
c
Also it's nice to not owned by a big scary corp. I like both tailscale and cloudflare, but good that there are alternatives, I really wanna give this a go on my homelab
w
Yeh good to see alternatives for sure
For now Cloudflare or Tailscale for me
h
Found it very simple to setup and use. Everything is in one place and no more messing with cloudfare DNS and tunnels. I have it hosted on a very cheap 1vcore VPs server(1euro a month)
My biggest issue with Cloudfare was that I have half a dozen domains and to use their tunnels I would have to move all my domains to cloudfares DNS servers
