Morning all.

Morning all. I can't keep up with tech and I'm too lazy / overwhelmed to read lots of reviews. So I'm looking for some trusted advice - if you were to buy a dev laptop what brands are reliable these days? I'm on a Dell and I've found it a bit flakey (overheats, throws bluescreens).

Still using my Surface Book 3 but all my Desktops are Dell Precisions mostly for the 3 year in-site warranty but they rarely have issues.

I've used a framework laptop for a year and a half, never had any issues with it but recently moved to a second hand Lenovo ThinkPad that @CarlCod_es recommended, great machine and does everything I need it to.

Lenovo X1 Carbon for me.. had 3 or 4 different generations. (discounted business purchases if you can acess (and TCB), plus latest purchase had enough lenovo points for a 10" Lenovo Tab Plus (8GB 128GB) (Wifi) for £40) Heard good things from colleagues about https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/professional-workstation-laptops/

If your lucky enough to be doing modern dotnet a mac is great

Yeah I'm too old for a mac change.

You'd be suprised how easy it is to make the switch ( took me a month) as my only work machine, but still windows for personal use 😄

I love my Asus ProArt Studiobook - best laptop I've ever had. Updated version is the ProArt P16. Though I use mine for a lot more than just dev work, so it's spec'd more for my extra-curricular activities.

I have been looking at the Pro Art- I like flippy / detachable lids but also a large screen but the 16 doesn't flip like the 13

I’m a dell xps fan.. lightweight , portable and does the job.. but but has in the past been prone to overheating and helicopter level fan noises.. I’d probably go to a framework or mac book.. but that’s the long term investment..have been tempted by the newer surface machines but these are all choice s based on previous so I’ve got and had long life with all mine minimum 3 to 4 years .. my last MacBooks all lasted nearly a decade..
s
I took the back off mine and cleaned the fans. Has made a huge difference.
r
I did the version where I cleaned it every so often with canned air but generally it’s always been decent price performance and weight for what I need I’m there for longevity more than anything it’s good memory that’s become the important thing for me .. i don’t game any more and the type of games I have played don’t require out and out high gfx Monkey island etc

I said i've had no issues with my Dell. It has been overheating all day since I left that comment 😂

Everyone should do this to their laptops, once or twice a year. Replacing the thermal compound can totally be worth it too if feeling brave - I've brought two laptops back from being practically unusable with a little Thermal Grizzly.

Or if you dare liquid metal! 🫣
In in reality friends don't let friends use Liquid Metal
