Time for a new laptop, not sure what to get... Current workhorse is a Dell Precision 5530 (15in, 32GB, i7), but I also use a Lenovo L13 Yoga (13in, 16GB, i5) and find the Lenovo performs on par with the Dell, and has a much better keyboard. Dell runs loud and hot, Lenovo is cool and quiet, when doing comparative tasks. So I'm thinking somewhere in the middle - anyone have any suggestions? Thinking a mid-range Lenovo with a spare RAM slot might do the trick...

I went desktop for better perf for cost, but mostly due to lockdown and me not travelling about with my computer. I will follow along with this thread as I will need to consider if my 5+yr old XPS15 can still be useful when the times I am out & about

I'm with Warren on this one! For personal use and better perf/cost I'm using a desktop, but for work and on-the-road related purposes I'm also using an XPS 15, one of the newer i9 ones. No complaints about it so far, except some thermal throttling under intense loads when improperly cooled.

XPS stuff is super pricey in AUD, well over 4k. We can't even get the i9! Desktop has more capacity for LED too. Or water cooling with goldfish

Yeh XPS not cheap here either but we got i9 options.
haha now I imagine dead goldfish floating around the tubes of a desktop at your place now Nath

Oddly, it's been 1 year to this day since I upgraded from a Lenovo Yoga (don't remember the exact model) to a Lenovo IdeaPad 5i direct from Lenovo with a 15.6" screen, i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GeForce MX450 (2GB), Fingerprint reader & a Type-C 95W charger which came to just over £600 after a Lenovo 10% off welcome discount code. It's a fantastic and powerful little machine, my only regret is not getting the SSD upgraded. I have an unused and recent 10% code should you (or anybody else) wish to use it.

depends on how much travel.. i have a work dell i7 xps 15 generally it runs much better than my dell 13inch but that is super portable so great when i used to contract and go to all the palces .. but if i was working from home . i'd may be think desktop again... i tend to look at price and work back i dont mind paying 2 grand as long as i know i am going to get it back over say two years etc

I'm really impressed by the little yoga, more than holds its own beside the Dell. Smaller keyboard, but much more comfortable too

i shall investigate. next time i get closer to replacement time

Can confirm XPS 13 loves to overheat. You should hear my fan right now!

@Joe Glombek my 13 inch will randomly try and take off also .. but i think the newer ones they have slightly improved both the ducting and fans so its reduced , but they do have an emphasis on running in eco mode
as i said for 90 percent of what i do the 13inch is perfect and super portable.. its just on super hot days its a bit noisy and random take off and landings
