Start applying to junior dev positions immediately. If I were starting a career in programming today, I would focus on data or machine learning. Whatever your dream is, don't put it on hold until you achieve x, or achieve y, and then z... Just go do it. Apply to those entry/junior level positions without experience! We prefer juniors without the dogma attached, they are teachable. The most critical thing in the interview process for an entry level position (here) is the culture fit. Skills can be trained and honed. Attitudes are infectious - positive or negative. It's far too great a risk to hire someone with a negative attitude or opposing ethics than someone who just needs some guidance.
Sorry for the lax attitude in my message above, I'm trying to get my thoughts out before a meeting! Please - start applying to jobs now. Reach out to your network (or begin building one). Find a charitable organization that means something to you, and see if you can develop something for them. That's how my business gained ground.
