There really isn't any trouble, sign up on a server that's still available (https://hachyderm.io/ and https://indieweb.social/ and https://fosstodon.org/ are popular choices), follow a bunch of people (start with @shanselman@hachyderm.io - he boosts a lot of posts so you discover new people). Done! 👍 Don't try to set up your own server though.. it's... not fun 😅
