Yeah.. well I understand the nationalism when it comes to the US 😅 the Mastodon.social one doesn't allow new signups at the moment but links to joinmastodon.org instead to go pick a server. But Morten is correct, it was actually really easy to switch so I wouldn't be too worried about it until you have a reason to switch.
