OK Windows Updates keeps nagging me to update to Windows 11 So what actually is new or is there anything in there worth upgrading for?
d
I have updated to windows 11. Nothing worth it as far as I can tell, just microsoft trying to push bing and msn onto you in new ways. I'm just happy that everything I need still runs
w
Meh in that case I won't bother if there is nothing new to shout home about
Knowing my luck, it would just make things break or be unstable
m
Middle task bar on a big monitor is amazing!
if you split your screen often and dont use fancy zones 11 has a nice feature for that
a
I'd jump back to Windows 10 in a heartbeat personally. With Windows 11 I've used a 3rd party to reinstate labels on the task bar and the Win 10 start menu as I don't like the simplistic & limited nature of the new one
m
I dont use the start menu I use PowerToys it has a mac style run thingy instead
w
OK seems like I shouldn't bother and let it keep nagging me for now
l
I'm in same boat Warren ... no matter how much you nag me Microsoft, I'm staying Win 10! I'll go to latest Windows when on a new machine!
d
There is a "stop bothering me" button
w
If you all had said well there is this really cool feature that I can't live without now, then I might have considered. But sounds like a lick of paint
I am sure I have clicked that button before but it still comes back
l
I click that every time! But in a few months it will try again it appears
d
Huh, interesting, I clicked it once and I never saw it again
m
This on windows 11 is the feature that comes to mind
d
This is cool, but not a "I can't live without" imo
s
What! Oh my, love Windows 11. πŸ˜… Except for as Matt says, use PowerToys instead of start. Everything else is great now. And yeah, power users can get their context menu back as well, but as a real power user I don't use windows Explorer anyway, Directory Opus never removed my menu πŸ˜‰
m
Yeah i can live without it, just nice, also for me the taskbar icons in the middle is amazing on the massive screen
a
I do like the tabbed file explorer though, that is a game changer
s
It's got rounded corners!
s
Pfff tabbed AND split view, THAT's where it's at! 🀘
b
I think the looks have improved quite a bit and I like the taskbar and stuff but that's really all that's changed, luckily all programming stuff still works exactly the same so upgrading won't hurt
s
Well it's EOL in 2 years, that's when it's time to get a new PC anyway πŸ˜‰
o
New features I like are: - tabs in explorer - the new "snap grid" thing for snapping windows to corners (almost as good as fancy zones in power tools, but not quite) - Auto HDR for games (although this was a feature in 10, but they removed it... I haven't forgotten Microsoft!) And, if I'm being nit picky, my dislikes are: - new start menu feels useless (I was one of the weirdos who heavily used tiles to organise my programs) - volume mixer is now hidden in settings rather than it's own a popup - you can't right click the taskbar to open task manager anymore (you need to right click the start button now) - the new right click menu hides everything useful behind a "show more" button But, at the end of the day, there's not really any disadvantages to upgrading imo, every minor gripe I have with 11 can be fixed with extensions like power toys etc 😁
s
PowerToys is the real selling point for me. I couldn't imagine working without Run. Did you know you can make your own plugins for it? It's based on Wox (wox.one), and the Plugin API is similar - only caveat, you can only install plugins by manually dropping in dll files πŸ™‚
h
Just on that. I believe a recent update restored Task Manager to the Taskbar on right-click. It’s certainly there for me now
m
@Owain Jones "the new right click menu hides everything useful behind a "show more" button" I fixed that somehow....
a
I really hate the new taskbar. I always have lots of windows open, and grouping them just kills productivity. In W10 I could disable that, but not in W11 😦 Are you saying I get can the old taskbar back with PowerTools or some other tool?
n
Right-click show-more can be fixed with a registry edit. I have original recipe context menus (and a left-aligned taskbar).
j
Gaming performance πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯
a
Yes. I also left-aligned my taskbar 😍
Or really I'm mostly still using Windows 10, but my laptop has W11
j
Oh, also, if anyone's stuck on Win 10 and wants to use the, clearly superior, centered taskbar: https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-center-your-taskbar-icons-in-windows-10/ πŸ™ƒπŸ˜‰
a
😱
s
> Are you saying I get can the old taskbar back with PowerTools or some other tool? Unfortunately that's the only thing I truly hate about W11, and it can't be fixed, I tried.
j
Right clicking the task bar is back!
s
But.. CTRL+SHIFT+ESC ftw πŸ™‚ (and CTRL+ALT+DEL can get you there as well if the system is very unresponsive, it should halt most threads for you).
j
Crikey - CTRL+SHIFT+ESC , that's some serious finger gymnastics.
s
Two fingers, easy!
WIN+X and then T also works πŸ˜„
j
Ah, that seems quicker for me.
m
Seb clearly games at work looking at the a and s keys πŸ˜„
s
It's so weird, I never ever play games, previous keyboard the c and v wore off, which is to be expected lol
I did inherit this keyboard so those letters might have been going already when I got it.
d
Oh god, and all this time I've been torturing my hands. You just opened my eyes
s
Haha! you're welcome!
a
You could also go for one of these. Although I could imagine Seb's shortcut is better if the system is a bit unresponsive
@Sebastiaan do I remember correctly that you have of these? (or one of the larger ones)
s
Yeah I have the small one, still use it a lot. I would love the larger one but I just can't justify the cost! πŸ˜…
a
Yeah. I look at the the small one, thinking I then want the large one, and then come to the same conclusion as you.
Apparently there is a new one
s
That is very pretty! But probably same cost as a larger one! πŸ˜‰
a
At Elgigantens website, yes
Although their XL is also 2099 kr. The new one is 1949 kr
s
Yeah, 1800 on Amazon. Someone has an XL on DBA for 600, could be good!
Not so much for buying used stuff, although 600 kr is a lot cheaper πŸ˜€
s
I usually only buy used if I can pick it up myself, too scared of scammers πŸ™‚ Easier in a big city though, I know.
w
My streamdeck controls the light for video and that's about it. I could probably use it better to do more things. @Sebastiaan what is yours setup to do or automate ?!
s
Ah I have a screen for Zoom, one for Meet, one for Teams and one for Discord - basically all the videoconf shortcuts are the most important for me to have ready!
w
Yeh I have zoom & discord but I never end up using them :S
Maybe need to spend some time with it properly and set it up nicely one time
