Aaah.. oh yes, used to use cool XDT transforms on web.config but that's no longer a thing. As a consumer, I would prefer you give me sensible defaults (if possible) and after I install the package, hopefully there's a page somewhere in the CMS that tells me I can add things to the

appSettings.json

file to overrule the defaults. I don't really like it when people update my config files.
