what data type is appropriate for rendering a list of images with links

I'd say, a single documentType (The object you create in the Content), carrying two (dataType) properties is probably much easier for you, - a MediaPicker (or a ImageCropper) - a ContentPicker (or a MultiNodeTreePicker)
