Umbraco onprem vs Umbraco Cloud questions

Hi everyone πŸ˜„ Im looking into Umbraco Cloud for one of our biggest customers that currently uses a onprem hosting model for Umbraco V13. I have come by some questions, that i would love to get your inputs on, as i don't want to be painten by the salesspeach that umbraco is so good at. These questions are all related to a pros/cons list i have, that i later on will present for our customer, so any input is relevant πŸ˜„ Note that if we decide to make the change from onprem to umbraco cloud, then we will need to go with the Enterprise plan. Questions πŸ˜„ 1. Support: I have head both good and bad about the Umbraco support on their cloud product. So i will love to hear what your experience is. 2. Is it possible to disable major upgrades? Sometimes our customer can be a bit slow in changing deprecated components and that means that major updates that are made on the go, can be a danger for the website. 3. In a team of 10+ developers, how would a repo setup and deployment work? I would love some kind of diagram of the workflow for both PR, merge and deployment. I have found some online, but i don't feel that they explain it very well. Most documentation is about cloning the project to your local machine, but i rather have a github repo for all the development code, that can later be released. I might come up with more questions, but this is what i have for now πŸ˜„

1. We offer great support, but I'm biased πŸ˜‡ 2. We only ever do patch upgrades, minors are opt-in an majors are manual 3. The new CI/CD workflows are good for working in larger teams https://docs.umbraco.com/umbraco-cloud/set-up/project-settings/umbraco-cicd - they're not the default (yet) but it would support a "normal" workflow best of all working in their own branches, doing PRs, etc. before releasing to Cloud.

Another good question. If the Umbraco Instance goes down or fails to start, then the delivery API will also be down, right? Or is it possible to seperate the two in some way?
s
Yes, like any server that goes down. Luckily you get some restart buttons in and debugging tools on Cloud.
I swear I'm not getting commision nor do I even work on the Cloud product

We have projects both on Cloud and hosted elsewhere, so I think I can give some unbiased answers. 😊 1. Support is fantastic, any issues are usually resolved very very fast. 2. Patches are automatic, minors are opt-in and can and should be activated for most projects. Upgrading to new majors are much easier and faster than outside Cloud. 3. Don’t have any experience with it yet, but the new CI/CD is the way to go, and it will be further expanded in the future, so there should be no worries there.

3. We use it, it's def the best way to go
The examples are pretty good so you should be abe to use that and roll your own when needed.

I have used cloud and a different hosting provider. I current am back on cloud but I think I can speak well to your first question. (This is purly based off my past experience) Support is a hit ore miss but more on the hit side, and it also depends on your subscption level. I have found when things are going on (like codegarden) they can be very slow to respond. I also find that, because it is a chat message system, communication can be challenging to make sure both parties understand what the other is asking. There have been multiple times I have had to repeat my self and this cause large delays in getting answers. (Now granted I am not the best in expressing thiugh via text so this probibly contributs to this) I will say that on my first round of Cloud hosting the team went above and beyond in trying to figure out the issue but unfortunately in doing so they took down my site for a fee hours because of a simple mistake that should not have happened. But I am told they have made process improvements and I am back on Cloud now and have seen a marked improvement in the support I am geting both quality and response times. I will say I am only on the starter plan. I am a solo personal business so I cant aford higher tiers right now. I do know Enterprise offer morr indepth support then mine so keep that in mind to.

@Maarten Thank you for you input πŸ˜„ @Matthew Alexandros Even though it will be on a heigher teir, im glad to know how the treatment of the "lower end" cutsomers are. It gives a good reflection on what to expect. Thank you very much πŸ˜„ '

@Steffen Nielsen I had forgoten to mention, when I left Cloud the first time and filled out there servay someone contacted me from Umbraco to get more information for investigation as well as to appologize. Since I have returned to Cloud I have experianced a few frustrating moments with communication clarity issues but I am much happier with the support I have gotten vs my last time.
