Built a fun little side project over the bank holiday, a global population checker using modern Umbraco and Next.js Live Demo : https://population-checker.vercel.app/ The idea was simple. Pull in population data from the World Bank API, combine it with country information and flags, then surface it all through a fast headless frontend. Tech stack: • Umbraco v17 • Umbraco Headless Delivery API • Next.js 16 + TypeScript • Phil Whittaker’s brilliant Next.js/Umbraco base model (thanks @Phil Whittaker !) • Umbraco.AI for generating country descriptions (thanks @Matt Brailsford) • FlagCDN for the country flags • World Bank Open Data API for the population figures One of the more fun parts was importing the World Bank data directly into Umbraco as node content. I used Claude to help generate the import scripts, which made turning API data into structured CMS content surprisingly quick. Doing this manually would have took forever. (Yawnnnnnnn!) The frontend is built with Next.js 16 and TypeScript, consuming Umbraco purely headlessly through its Delivery API.
